The Far Site

For more than ten years, roughly between 2008 and 2018, photographer Francesco Marchini has been following a group of Roman friends in their tireless dedication and love for graffiti. Far from being interested in the actual ‘pieces’ they realised, he carefully depicted the spaces and the places they crossed, with an attention to gestures, emotions and the unfolding of unpredictable events. From abandoned industrial sites to archeological ruines, from popular train yards to residential squats, the photographs he accumulated capture various intimate moments between the act of vandalism and the disillusioned passing of time, the struggle of day-to-day living and the dispelling of its hardships through playful activities. Looking back at this stratification of images, Marchini began to realise their narrative potential, the tension between documentation and fiction inherent to a well-defined historical and geographical episode that fits into a parable - that of the world of writing - in constant change. Striving to go beyond the surface of the Roman chapter of graffiti history, here we find the other, far side of it - almost as if it was a negative double of the city’s most known and told stories around writing. In The Far Site, Marchini’s first monograph made in collaboration with Dutch publisher and printer Chemistry Publishing , the black and white photographs from the author’s personal archive dialogue with a fictional writing that tries to speculatively elaborate on these experiences - adding another layer of time and reflection in this story. The result is a narrative that, between images and texts, delves into the representation of a friendship that was marked by the experience of writing in the urban and suburban areas of Rome at a particular time.

Per circa dieci anni - indicativamente tra il 2008 e il 2018 - il fotografo Francesco Marchini ha seguito da vicino un gruppo di amici romani nella loro instancabile dedizione verso i graffiti. Lungi dall’interessarsi ai veri e propri “pezzi” realizzati, egli ha raffigurato con cura gli spazi e i luoghi che essi attraversavano, con un’attenzione ai gesti, alle emozioni e allo svolgersi di eventi imprevedibili. Dai siti industriali abbandonati alle rovine archeologiche, dagli scali ferroviari popolari alle occupazioni residenziali, le fotografie che ha accumulato nel tempo catturano vari momenti intimi, compresi tra gli atti di vandalismo e il disilluso scorrere del tempo, la fatica della vita quotidiana e l’esorcizzazione delle difficoltà della stessa attraverso attività ludiche. Nel ripercorrere a ritroso, attraverso il suo archivio, questa stratificazione di immagini, l’autore ne intuisce il potenziale narrativo, la tensione tra documentazione e finzione inerente a un episodio storico e geografico ben definito che si inserisce a sua volta in una parabola - quella del mondo del writing - in continuo cambiamento. Cercando di andare oltre la superficie del capitolo ‘romano’ della storia dei graffiti, qui ne troviamo il rovescio, il doppio in negativo delle storie sul writing più conosciute e raccontate della città. In The Far Site, la prima monografia di Francesco Marchini realizzata in collaborazione con Chemistry Publishing , le fotografie in bianco e nero provenienti dall'archivio personale dell'autore dialogano con una scrittura autobiografica che tenta di elaborarne speculativamente il contenuto - aggiungendo un altro strato di tempo e riflessione in questa storia. Il risultato è un racconto che, tra immagini e testi, approfondisce la rappresentazione di un'amicizia che, nel sua spinta a cercare un posto sempre più lontano, rimane segnata dall'esperienza del writing nelle aree urbane e suburbane di Roma.
